Why sporting decisions must be transparent

When a sanction or disciplinary decision lands without detailed public reasons, two readings become equally possible: that the decision is well founded, or that it isn't. Doubt rarely benefits the institution.

Publishing the reasons behind a decision doesn't call it into question — on the contrary, it's what allows it to be publicly defended when it is well founded.

We therefore ask that every significant disciplinary decision come with a statement of reasons that is accessible and understandable, even to a non-specialist audience.

This is one of the movement's five central demands.
